Ghana Prisons Service Expresses Worry about Inmates Signing Up On Social Media Platforms While Serving There Prisons Terms

The prison is a correctional institution for the detainment of persons who are in lawful custody either accused, awaiting trial or convicted persons serving sentences. However many prisoners in Ghana continue to enjoy some form of luxury during their jail terms by joining conversations on many social media platforms through the use of mobile phones.

The inmates get to join social media conversation through phones sent to prisons during visits by relatives of these inmates. This new trend at various correctional centers across the country is a threat to the society.

Matilda Bafour Awuah, Controller General of the Ghana Prisons Service, disclosed this on Friday during a closing ceremony of a joint Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) course at the Pwalugu Police Public Safety Training School. The six weeks High Risk course was jointly collaborated by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service. Madam Awuah indicated that the intensive training between the two security agencies was a way of tapping intelligent information on activities going on behind prison walls.

The Controller General of Prisons entreated the police and the prison service to further collaborate in finding lasting solution to the congestion and overcrowding in prisons as well the high number of inmates on remand in prison custodies across the country. In all, 80 security personnel from both services underwent physical and metal training christened ‘High Risk Course 1’ to prepared them adequately to take up very important assignments in their respective units.

Deputy Minister of Interior, James Agalga said government will continue to equip the police and the correctional officers with skills and knowledge required in dealing with challenges of critical emerging crimes. Mr. Agalga further assured the Interior Ministry’s continues commitment to provide the necessary assistants required for the sustainability of the Pwalugu Police Public Safety Training School and other training institutions of the Police Service to enable them actualize their missions and visions.
