The Union of May Borns (UMABO) has unveiled it constitution as amended 2021. The amendment of the constitution became necessary after the executives and members of UMABO saw the need to include and also take out or modify certain portions of the old constitution which was adopted on May 31, 2013 in Bolgatanga.

Speaking at the union’s general meeting on Sunday May 9, 2021, President of UMABO, William Nlanjerbor Jalulah said a 3-member committee was set up to carry out the amendment process which he said was successfully done in February this year.

According to him, the work of the committee was submitted to members at a general meeting held on February 28, 2021 for their inputs before the house voted for the ratification of the amended constitution.

Key inclusions in the amended constitution which hitherto were not captured in the old constitution are provisions for establishment of UMABO branches – National, Regional, District/Municipal and Zonal branches across the country. The amended constitution has also extended the tenure of office of the executives from 2 years to 3 years for a maximum of 2 terms.

Also, unlike in the old constitution, the amended constitution in Article 15 is explicit on who shall manage welfare matters of the union. It states; “There shall be a sub-committee of the executive made up of the Vice President (convener), the Organising Secretary and the Treasurer.”

With 16 articles, the amended constitution also gives detailed processes by which it can be amended. It states, “The constitution maybe amended after every six years of its coming into being.”

Again, the amended constitution has made provisions in terms of space for membership dues, special contributions and donations.
