Poverty, Tradition and Religious Practices Causes of Malnutrition in Upper East Region

Poverty in the Upper East Region is one major cause of malnutrition among children in the region. The region records the second highest number of malnutrition in the country with Northern leading and Upper West Region on the third position.

With only one short rainy season coupled with an endemic poverty in the region, the rural folks in the region find it difficult to get enough food and the right variety to feed their children, thereby contributing to increased malnourish children in the region.

Upper East Regional Nutrition Officer, Gloria Kobati made this observation during an annual nutrition review, coordinating and planning meeting held in Bolgatanga. In a presentation by the regional nutrition officer, the Upper East Region currently records 32 percent of stunted children.

Madam Kobati told exclusively told A1 News that religious and some traditional practices contribute to the increasing case of malnutrition in the region. Madam Kobati has therefore called on parents to feed their children with food varieties such as vegetables, fruits, meat and eggs to reverse the situation.

The United Nations Representative, Dr. Imran Ravji said malnutrition among children has devastating consequences on their growth and development. Dr. Ravji has therefore called for continues advocacy for political commitment in ending child hunger and malnutrition in Ghana.

Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme who bemoaned the malnutrition situation in the region has called for a focused and priority to the School Feeding Program to ensure it sustainability.

According to Mr. Syme the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has been working with the support of the UN to the establishment of a Regional Nutrition Steering Committee to promote a multi-sectoral approach in programming for nutrition.
