An unconfirmed number of miners are feared dead after a mining pit collapsed on them after Monday heavy downpour at Gbane, in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.
The sad incident happened at night on Monday, June 2, 2021, when the miners were working in the tunnels while it was raining.
Rescue team is currently on site trying to retrieve the trapped miners from the collapsed pit.
Robert Naab, a community member who spoke on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio, said, the construction of a road by a mining company is partly to blame for the flooding of one of the tunnels which could not hold the pressure by the water and caved in.
Mr. Naab, was emphatic that the trapped miners are not illegal miners but rather workers of one of the concessions which is small scale mining company.
Talensi DCE Dr. Christopher Boatbil, told the media that the water in the tunnels have been drained and rescue team were making efforts to retrieve the trapped bodies.
He said, they are working closely with the rescue team to retrieve the bodies.
It will be called that a similar incident happened in 2019 where there was a collapse of a mining pit at Yenyeya and Pubortaaba underground mining concessions at Gbane in Tuesday, January 22, 2019 which led to the death of several illegal miners.
