Hernia Case on the Rise in Nabdam District

Majority of males both young and old in Nabdam District in the Upper East Region suffer from hernia infections. Women too in the district are not left out. This is affecting productivity in the area since most of the victims who are predominantly farmers cannot farm for long hours.

In order to help reduce the situation of hernia cases in the district, Member of Parliament of Nabdam Constituency, Boniface Gambila has sponsored the surgery of about 100 people suffering of hernia, hydrocele and goiter cases. The surgery was dubbed operation zero hernia, zero goiter and zero elephantiasis case in Nabdam

The MP bemoaned that most young men in the district who suffer hernia cases cannot attend social gatherings because of the stigma associated with it. According to him through his own initiative about 100 males and females had their hernia removed at Amiah Hospital, a private hospital in Bolgatanga last year and this year. While a long list of people from the district currently on waiting list to undergo the surgery.

A1 radio’s team was at the Amiah hospital to witness the surgery. Dressed on light blue and a light mouth and nostril mask to match and hand gloves, the team of surgeons were busy attending the patients in the theater.

The team of surgeons was led by Professor Francis Abantanga, Head of Surgery Unit of Komfor Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Mr. Abantanga who was attending to one of the victims suffering of hydrocele said the patient situation could deteriorate the quality of life of victim when the situation becomes worst.

Mr. Abantanga said people who undergo hernia surgery have to stay away from hard physical activity. He added that sexual performance of persons operated of hernia is not affected.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gambila said a research will soon commence in the district to ascertain the cause of the widespread of hernia cases in the area.
