Upper East Region Records Reduction in HIV Prevalence Rate

The Upper East Region recorded an HIV prevalence rate of 1.7 % in 2014, down from 2.1 % in 2013, making the region one of the best performing regions when it comes to HIV care. Mother-to-child HIV infections also reduced from 6.4 % in 2013 to 1.1 % in 2014.

This according to the Upper East regional director of health services, Dr. John Koku Awoonor Williams. Dr. Awoonor Williams made the disclosure at an in-service training for health workers in managing of HIV/AIDS cases.

He said HIV testing and counseling in the region also saw an increase from 90.6% in 2013 to 96.9 % in 2014. According to Dr. Awoonor, the achievements were due to the fact that 165 additional health staff were trained in 2014 to manage HIV cases in the region, in addition to the an already-existing 51 trained staff.

Despite these achievements, 11.2 % of people living with HIV/AIDS in the region died last year, compared to 9.5 % who died in 2013.

Dr. Awoonor Williams disclosed that the Bawku Municipallity and the Builsa North and South districts are known to be hot spots of HIV/AIDS in the Upper East Region

Eight Health workers who contributed significantly towards the attainment of HIV case reduction in the region were recognized with certificate each.

Ayamga Beatrice Azure, a Senior Midwife at the Kongo-Logre Health Center said there were times they had to provide transportation to persons living with HIV/AIDS back to their various homes after their visits to the health centers
