“We were having difficulties finding who were the thieves that were always behind the stealing but I can confidently mention the Fulani herdsmen because one was arrested. That particular one who was arrested was in our community so I strongly believe that there are people who team up with others to steal from us.”

The Assemblyman for the Kumblingo/Bolingo Electoral Area in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, Stephen Abelimah Akugre made these claims when he spoke on the Day Break Upper East Show. He continued to state the cattle rustler who was arrested had in his possession 18 stolen cattle.

The Assemblyman was worried about the presence of the herdsmen in the area. Mr. Akugre disclosed that several acres of farmlands have been grazed by the herdsmen thus exacerbating the already dire situation of farmers in the area.

“We don’t do anything aside farming but when you are farming, you will see that they have sent the animals to graze the fields. When you are rearing, your animal cannot even move. They will follow you and take them away from you and so most of the people are now into this galamsey work.”

The Ghana Police Service was praised by Mr. Akugre for stepping up patrols in the neighbourhood. He explained that although things may have improved marginally, there are still significant security concerns. He, therefore, urged the police to continue their planning and clear the area of the aforementioned crimes.

Earlier, Mr. Akugre expressed some disquiet about the rampant motorbike thefts.
