20 athletes from Upper East Region to participate in nat’l athletics competition in Savelugu

The 2023 edition of the Upper East Regional Cross Country has ended successfully in Bolgatanga.

The event took place Saturday, February 11, 2023 at the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium.

Over 200 athletes from the various secondary schools in the 15 districts took part in the 10km race which was put together by the Upper East Regional Athletics Association (UERAA) in collaboration with Upper East Regional Sports Authority.

At the end of the race for the female category, Christiana Amoak of Sansec finished first with a time of 39.42. Naomi Anabila, finished second with a time of 40.36 whilst Ophelia Atengbisa finished third with a time of 40.50.In the male category, Faisal Abubakri finished first with a time of 31.57. Felix Asaana of Navasco finished second with a time of 32.56 whilst the third place went to Charles Asinlachim with a time of 34.32

In all twenty(20) athletes were selected; ten(10) male and ten(10) female for camping ahead of the National Cross Country in Savelugu on the 25th of February, 2023.

Speaking to athletes after the race, President of the Ghana Athletics Association who doubles as the Chairman of the Upper East Regional Athletics Association Ababu Afelibeik said the selected athletes will camp for further training before they will leave for Salvelgu.

Mr. Afelibeik urged the athletes to keep training when they get back to their various schools.

“Upper East Region has come up in sports in general, especially athletics but for the past four years, there have not been any competition and with that the tempo is coming down,” he stated.

Ababu Afelibeik however urged the Physical Education(PE) teachers to keep their athletes active in spite of the difficulties so that at any given time there’s a competition they’ll be adequately prepared.

The Director of the Upper East Regional Sports Authority, Iddrisu Ahmed Bediako and the Regional Coordinator of Physical Education, Madam Diana Aboor among many itiher personalities were present at the day’s event
