The National Democratic Congress (NDC) may have concerns about Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s potential leadership role for the party in the upcoming 2024 election. The NDC is apprehensive because, despite the lack of constitutionally defined responsibilities as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has managed to make significant political advancements for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the northern region of the country. If Dr. Bawumia were to become the flagbearer, the NDC believes he would be virtually unbeatable.

Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa, the Upper East Regional Communications Director for the NPP, shared these observations during his appearance on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

The NDC’s concerns stem from Dr. Bawumia’s contribution to making substantial political inroads for the NPP in the northern region of the country, despite his role as Vice President lacking explicit constitutional mandates. This has raised alarm within the NDC as they fear that if Dr. Bawumia were to lead the NPP as their flag bearer, his influence and popularity would make him an incredibly formidable opponent.

The discussion aimed to shed light on the potential implications of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership aspirations within the NPP and the impact it may have on the political landscape leading up to the 2024 election.

“When he was introduced into the political limelight, the numbers kept increasing. Today, look at the number of NPP MPs we have. That is the one thing the NDC people are realising. A good number of them know this fact. Even as a running mate, look at the influence he has. When he wasn’t there, where were the numbers?”

“If you come to the north, we have even seen videos where NDC bigwigs are complaining that if they allow Bawumia to become the flagbearer, he is going to collapse the NDC. Even as running mate, he has been able to overturn the party’s fortune. Now imagine that you make him the leader. Imagine what he can do,” he said.

Mr. Ayinbisa, explained that even in the former President John Mahama’s region, the NPP has made serious inroads.

The Communication Director explained that the VEEP could be attributed to the many achievements of the government. The removal of the guarantor system for student loans, enhancement of the mobile money interoperability, digitisation of utility payment and NHIS registrations and renewals as well the enhanced National ID systems, Mr. Ayinbisa said are but a few of the remarkable achievements of the VEEP.
