A Nutritionist, Paul Akapanga, has advised the general public to be wary of their consumption of energy drinks, sugar, and other drinks with high levels of caffeine.
He noted that energy drinks were dangerous because they could expose people of all ages to diseases like stroke.
The Nutritionist made this revelation when he was speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East show with Mark Smith on how to prevent stroke.
According to him, stroke as a disease in the past was deemed to be a disease that affected only the elderly, but that narrative has changed as any person could be affected by the disease.
This, he explained, has more to do with the kind of food people in recent times have consumed, which exposes them to so many diseases.
He explained that high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes were some of the leading causes of stroke and advised the public to be measured by the food they eat, including their diet and exercising regularly.
Mr. Akapanga said one could get a stroke when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients, which is often referred to as ischemic stroke.
Or one could also get a stroke when an artery in the brain leaks blood or ruptures. This, he said, is an emergency condition in which a ruptured blood vessel causes bleeding inside the brain.
He added that high blood pressure and trauma are two leading causes, and taking blood-thinning drugs may also increase a person’s risk.
