Naab Nyaakora Mantii, the Chief of Baare in the Talensi district of the Upper East region, has added his voice to the calls for gold mining company, Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, to assist in establishing a commercial airport in the area instead of the initially planned airstrip construction.

The chief’s plea comes as the Chinese mining company operating in the Talensi district had originally intended to construct an airstrip to facilitate their operations, particularly in transportation. However, the government has initiated negotiations with Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited to construct an airport for the region, given the absence of an airport in the area. Currently, residents have to travel to Tamale to board a flight.

During this year’s Daa festival celebration at his palace, Chief Naab Mantii emphasised the importance of constructing a commercial airport in the region. He highlighted that this initiative would significantly contribute to opening up the Upper East region in various ways.

“I have heard that Cardinal Namdini is planning to construct an airstrip here in Talensi. I urge them to consider making it a commercial airport. This development will not only benefit this area but the entire region. It will also assist the government by reallocating funds initially intended for airport construction to other projects that could benefit us. Therefore, my plea is for them to aim for a commercial airport,” Chief Naab Mantii stated.

However, sources close to the mining company have confirmed that plans are well underway, with designs and funds already approved for the construction of an airport in the Upper East region.
