The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has expressed his disappointment with C. K. Tedam University of Applied Sciences and Technology (CKT-UTAS) and Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) for their shortcomings in adequately preparing the youth with essential skills to harness the abundant natural resources in the region.

According to the Minister, despite the universities offering practical courses, they have not succeeded in providing the youth with the requisite knowledge that can secure them employment in the various mining sectors within the region.

“It is disheartening to note that despite the vast natural resources the region is blessed with, the region has benefited little from them. This is because the youth do not have the adequate skills to benefit from these resources. We can boast huge natural resources such as gold and others, but the youth do not have the skills to work in these areas,” he said.

Mr. Yakubu was speaking at the 3rd Congregation of C K Tedam University of Applied Sciences and Technology held in Navrongo.

He highlighted the significance of aligning educational programs with the needs of the job market, particularly emphasizing the potential employment opportunities in the agriculture and mining sectors.

He stressed the urgency of focusing on skill development that seamlessly integrates with existing job markets, particularly in sectors vital to the region’s economic growth.

“I, therefore, challenge CKT-UTAS and others to make it a duty and come out with programs that equip the youth in these areas.”

The Minister urged the universities to collaborate closely with industries, fostering partnerships that facilitate internships, practical experience, and exposure to real-world challenges.

This, he believed, would better equip graduates with the hands-on skills required for successful integration into the workforce.
