The Upper East Regional Rent Manager, Adam Kasim, has asked tenants to report to the Rent Control Department if they have concerns about the pricing of their rent.
When Mr. Kasim spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, he stated that the Department can help both parties reach a fairer deal.
“The rent act is clear. If a landlord is quoting you a price and you, the tenant or potential tenant, looking at the structure or the premises, feel it is not worth the amount your landlord is quoting, you have the right to apply to rent control for what we call an assessment of the recoverable rent.”
Mr. Kasim explained that the Rent Control Department arrives at what could be considered a fair price based on a multiplicity of factors. Once a price is arrived at, both the landlord and tenants are bound to that price.
If any of the parties disagrees with the price set by the department, they are then required to appeal the figure in a court of law.
