When Joel Atinga Nsobila, a native of Tindonsobligo, a community in the Upper East Region of Ghana, announced his intention to break the record for the longest barbecue marathon, many, particularly on social media, thought it was a hoax and, as such, ridiculed the move.

However, it looks like many across the country are now in sync with Mr. Nsobila’s attempt and are willing to support him.

He made these comments when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, March 13, 2024.

“When the first flyer came out, I saw a lot of comments that were encouraging. Others said it was a joke. The second flyer has been buzzing on Twitter, and so people are taking it very seriously now,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nsobila has received official approval from Guinness World Records to embark on the longest barbecue marathon, a marathon he has dubbed “KHEBA-A-THON.”

This ambitious endeavor aims to shatter the current record of 80 hours, with Mr. Nsobila setting his sights on an extraordinary 90-hour feat.

According to him, “I chose to do this because I already grill kebabs for a living. I wanted to use that to my advantage. I did not want to go in for reading or singing when I was not in that field.”

Mr. Nsobila hopes to use the marathon to make himself a businessman. It is also to bring attention to and confirm the popular notion that the grilling of meat is the forte of residents in northern Ghana.
