The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Talensi, Robert Ayindenaba Alibo, has proposed the creation of a “skills bank”—a database of local youths’ skills and qualifications aimed at connecting them with job opportunities through global networks. According to Mr. Alibo, this initiative is designed to bridge the gap between potential and employment.

“I see youth unemployment as something we can address locally. One of the things I propose is developing a skills bank. This will be a database where all the skills and qualifications of our youth will be recorded. Those of us in better positions within organizations globally can access this database and identify qualified individuals for any opportunities that arise,” he explained.

“Beyond the jobs provided by the government and private sector, this is something we can do as a community to tackle the unemployment problem.”

Mr. Alibo also plans to offer training to improve interview skills and address barriers to job acquisition. “That’s a gap we need to fill. We’ll likely organize training sessions for our youth to overcome the challenges of interviews, which have been a major stumbling block for many in securing jobs,” he added.

He shared these plans in an interview on A1 Radio on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, while outlining his vision for the constituency. He emphasized his deep commitment and long-standing connection to the community, expressing his aims to address key local issues.

Mr. Alibo highlighted his previous work with World Vision in Talensi as a major influence on his strong desire to bring meaningful change to the community. “My presence in the political space has been long-standing. I worked with World Vision in Talensi, and despite being an NPP member, my role as an NGO worker showed no bias toward any particular group.”

He stressed his dedication to making a direct impact on the community, driven by his personal experiences and the challenges faced by the people of Talensi. “I always seek platforms where I can directly influence my people. My desire stems from the community’s life struggles. Having done all this, it’s clear that someone with this background is needed to represent you in Parliament, where they can have a broader platform to make a difference.”

In addition to the proposed Skills Bank, Mr. Alibo emphasized the need for educational reform. He proposed establishing model learning centers in each of Talensi’s three zones—East, Central, and West—to enhance teaching quality and provide resources for both students and teachers. “I want to establish a model learning center in each zone. These centers will serve as resource hubs where teachers can be trained and equipped, benefiting both students and other teachers in neighboring communities.”

On the agricultural front, he stressed the importance of sustainable land use for current and future generations. “My plan for agriculture is to sustain the land so that we can use it now and ensure it remains usable for future generations.”

He criticized the practice of offering temporary assistance from politicians to gain votes. “Our farmers face difficulties regularly, and what I often see is politicians providing temporary help, such as bringing a tractor to plough during election seasons, simply to win votes,” he said.

However, Mr. Alibo appealed to voters in Talensi to support his candidacy, promising a commitment to drive development and address the pressing issues facing the constituency.
