The family of the 12-year-old Awine Akolgo from the Beo-Kansigo community in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region is appealing to the well-meaning individuals and organisations to assist its daughter to access medical care.
Awine Akolgo has been suffering from a strange disease for the past 8 years. She has been unable to seek proper medical attention because her parents could not afford it. According to her mother, who gave her name as Teni, the only means of getting healing, because of the financial inadequacy is through prayer. She has therefore been taking 12-year-old Awine Akolgo to various prayer centers.
“It started with her hands so I thought it was just a problem with blood flow in the hand so we applied some ointment on it. Later, the stomach began to swell so we started sending her to churches for prayers and started using anointing oil on her.”- the mother narrated.

Teni confessed that anytime her daughter was sent to a health facility, the only response she got from health personal was that her daughter’s illness had persisted for long. The situation raises the cost of treatment.
This, Akolgo’s mother said made her give up on visiting hospitals and rely on prayers and herbs. At the time of Wordfm’s visit, the little girl could hardly speak. Little Akolgo was however able to narrate that she is in severe pain. “My legs and hands usually pain so badly and feel woozy,” the girl explained.
However, Akolgo’s mother contends the level of hardship the family faces heightens her daughter’s situation.
Little Akolgo’s father is also handicapped; he can neither speak nor walk. This means that the entire burden of taking care of the family has fallen on the 12-year-old’s mother. The disease is having a toll on the little girl’s education as she often absents herself from school because of her health situation.
Awuni’s class teacher, Ernestina Azambila at the Beo-Kansigo Primary “B” School explained that Awini’s health condition has affected her ability to write or contribute in class.
The family is thus appealing to the public and benevolent individuals to help them to seek medical care for their suffering daughter.
