Teachers at the Bachongsa basic school in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region have planned to go on mass transfer due to the failure by authorities to put measures in place to improve teaching and learning in the area.
The teachers said they are struggling to get basic amenities to improve pupils’ comprehension. They are also grappling with accommodation’s issues.
Speaking to A1 Radio, they explained that after their living quarters’ were burnt down by fire 5 months ago, authorities are yet to put it in place for use.
The Bachongsa Teachers’ Quarters was guttered by fire on 28th June 2021, where six out of the eight rooms of the entire building were burnt to ashes.
The situation, the teachers noted, has led some of them to be pairing six persons per room while some of the female teachers are sleeping in the school library.
“We are not worried about the struggles we are going through because we are planning of going on transfer. So, whether authorities fix it or not we are not bothered”, one teacher said.
Touching on the issue, the Assembly Member for the area, Alice Akalachiba said she was not surprised by the teachers’ plan mass transfer because they have approached her several times regarding their accommodations.
“I have made attempts to call authorities to come to the aid of the teachers but to no avail. NADMO, the District Assembly and Member of Parliament all came to witness the fire and made pledges but we are all waiting to see that actualized.”
Madam Akalachiba however called on the teachers to be calm as efforts are underway to support their accommodations.
