Civil society pressure group, Arise Ghana says it has disagreed with the content of the police response to their letter notifying them of their intended demonstration to demand better from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Arise Ghana wrote to the Ghana Police Service (GPS) notifying them of their planned demonstration over what they described as untold hardship in the system. The police responded to their letter detailing why they cannot use the routes they intend to use for the demonstration.
A member of Arise Ghana, Selorm Dramani speaking today on Day Break Upper East Show on A1 Radio stated that “the police said that given the threat of terrorism in the country now they have limited demonstrations to certain routes in Accra and the police described those routes as traditional routes and all demonstrations will terminate at Independence Square.”
He says the police do not have any such powers to limit them to specific roads for their intended 48 hours intended demonstration.
According to Mr. Dramani, the police are just arrogating to themselves powers to designate certain routes in Accra as traditional routes for protestors. He insists that the police cannot prevent them from accessing parliament adding that they will embark on the demonstration regardless of any frustration from the police.
