A young chef from Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region is breaking gender narratives enshrined within the northern sector while projecting the culture of the people of northern Ghana through his culinary skills.

At 24, Abiro Wisdom Seidu Napaana is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Chef Abiro Victual Services in Accra.

Because of his expertise, Chef Abiro was selected to lead young Ghanaian chefs for the Young Chefs African Culinary Cup in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Emirates.

Chef Abiro, a successful male chef from the northern part of the country has taken up advocacy. In a recent interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper Show, he called on parents to allow their male children to venture into cooking if they so wish.

Cooking, Chef Abiro explained is no longer a hobby but a lucrative business opportunity.

“The profession itself hails from France and we have come to realize that it is a very lucrative business, unlike the olden days. It is a great profession, equal to one being a doctor or a lawyer.”

“In this business, if you don’t know how to mix food; taking into account the acidity or base level of it, you will end up killing people. So, it is a profession that only passionate and knowledgeable people venture into. So, if you have your son or daughter who’s passionate about it as a parent you have to support such a child.”

“I can tell you that, as a chef, people will come and buy a plate like Ghc500.00 or more. And if you are lucky enough to find yourself at a well-established hotel, the payment can be close to or more than some teachers and doctors.”

As part of his vision to encourage students to take up cooking seriously, Chef Abiro is expected to hold a demonstration class at the Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School.
