A panelist on A1 Radio’s popular relationship talk show Love Affairs, George Ayika Awuni, has stirred intense controversy after stating that there is nothing wrong with dating a friend’s ex-girlfriend, provided certain conditions are met.
His comment, made during last week’s edition of the program, quickly ignited strong emotional reactions among both in-studio panelists and listeners who phoned in to share their opinions.
While George Ayika Awuni and fellow panelist Kezia Aporepeya Nsoh argued that there is nothing wrong with dating a friend’s ex-girlfriend, Benedicta Asakisina Akambase and Louis Marie Atoluko Ayariga strongly disagreed.
Speaking on the show, Awuni argued that adults should be free to pursue love wherever they find it and that past relationships should not permanently restrict others from forming new connections.
> “If two people are no longer together and have both moved on, I don’t see why their friends can’t develop genuine feelings for an ex,” he said. “Love is unpredictable. If a relationship ends respectfully, a friend shouldn’t be deprived of the chance to be happy with the same person.”
His remarks immediately sparked heated exchanges among the panelists.
Family life coach Louis Marie Atoluko Ayariga firmly disagreed, insisting that dating a friend’s ex is a breach of loyalty and friendship.
“It may be true that relationships can end, but loyalty must remain,” she countered. “Your friend trusted you enough to let you into their relationship space. Turning around to date their ex can cause emotional wounds and destroy trust.”
Listeners who phoned in were sharply divided. Some agreed with Awuni’s view that “love should not be controlled by past relationships,” while others described the idea as “a betrayal that can end long-term friendships.”
Though the debate remains unresolved, one thing is clear: the topic has struck a nerve and sparked a broader conversation about loyalty, love, and modern relationship values.
