The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Aleemyarum, has directed traditional leaders within his jurisdiction to appoint environmental sub-chiefs — known locally as Tisi Naba — to curb the indiscriminate cutting of trees in their communities.

Speaking to Bolga FM reporter Moses Anaba Azubire at his palace on Saturday, November 8, 2025, the chief linked rising levels of deforestation to worsening climate conditions and irregular rainfall patterns in the Bongo District.

“The rainfall this year has taken a different trend,” he said, explaining that tree destruction has become widespread. He noted that high rates of tree harvesting for charcoal production have contributed to prolonged dry spells and declining rainfall.

He appealed to residents to stop illegal tree cutting and commit to tree planting to restore the environment.

The paramount chief also raised concerns about healthcare infrastructure in the district, noting that the Bongo District Hospital lacks a functioning morgue.

“Years ago, I once called the hospital a clinic because of what it lacks,” he said.

Naba Baba Salifu added that the traditional council has secured documented land and is seeking support from government, NGOs and private individuals to construct a modern hospital to improve health service delivery in the district.
