2026 budget guarantees major road improvements across Upper East Region – NDC

The Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, says the 2026 Budget Statement presented to Parliament on November 13, 2025, by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, lays out significant road infrastructure commitments for the region.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Salifu said each constituency across the country has been allocated 10 kilometres of road projects, with several constituencies in the Upper East Region receiving even more.

“Every constituency has been given 10 kilometres,” he said. “In the Upper East Region, some of the constituencies had more than 10 kilometres. For example, Bolga Central had 15 kilometres. And that is a plus to the lobbying skills of the sitting MP, Honourable Isaac Adongo.”

He added that other constituencies received 12 kilometres or slightly more, noting that allocation depended largely on the nature of the roads and the level of work required. Some roads, he explained, will require culverts and gravel surfacing in the first phase, while others—already in motorable condition—will see quick upgrades.

“If it is already an existing road, like the road from Ojam to the [A1 Radio] studio here, which needs some little work and we have put bitumen on it, that will quickly be done,” he said.

Mr. Salifu stated that the NDC government is committed to giving the regional capital, Bolgatanga, a complete facelift and ensuring full connectivity between districts. “When you look at the regional capital now, which is Bolga, it is our responsibility to make sure that it is properly connected to all the districts,” he said. “That is what President Mahama’s legacy is. That is what he wants to do.”

He highlighted ongoing work on major inter-district road networks, including Bolga–Navrongo, Navrongo–Sandema–Fumbisi, Bolga–Paga and Bolga–Bawku. He said these roads will be fully connected within President Mahama’s first term.

“We have eight constituencies on the Bawku stretch. Because Bolga is part, Nabdam is part, then you have the other constituencies. So when you get to Bawku Central and you are going to Garu or Tempane, they are the short routes that government will definitely tackle.”

Mr. Salifu expressed confidence that by the end of President Mahama’s first term, the Upper East Region’s inter-district and inter-regional road challenges would be resolved. He also hinted at upcoming improvements in water supply systems in communities that remain underserved.

“I know the inner routes in Bolga Central obviously will get a massive facelift,” he said. “And I know the water situation… the other areas that are left will also get a massive improvement.”
