The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Bolgatanga Municipality, Roland Ayoo, has urged the youth of Yorogo to take advantage of government-sponsored agricultural programmes as a pathway to employment, food security and sustainable livelihoods.
He made the call while addressing residents at the annual Tigsitaaba Festival in Yorogo, which brought together traditional leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups and residents to celebrate culture, unity and development.
Mr. Ayoo said although government continues to create job opportunities for young people, agriculture remains one of the most viable and profitable sectors, particularly for youth in agrarian communities.
“Government has rolled out several agricultural interventions to support young people who are ready to work. These programmes are not for politicians; they are for you—the youth. If you take them seriously, they can change your lives,” he said.
Against the backdrop of rising youth unemployment and increasing rural–urban migration, the MCE stressed that agriculture offers sustainable economic empowerment when approached as a business rather than a subsistence activity.
He highlighted initiatives such as the Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme, noting that such interventions are designed to boost productivity, create jobs and make farming more attractive and profitable for young people.
Mr. Ayoo encouraged the youth to abandon the perception that farming is only for the aged or uneducated, explaining that modern agriculture requires innovation, commitment and discipline.
He assured the community of the Assembly’s readiness to collaborate with traditional authorities to ensure that eligible youth are registered and supported to benefit from government programmes. He also appealed to chiefs and elders to make land available for farming and support young farmers in their communities.
Commending the leadership of Yorogo, Mr. Ayoo praised the chief, elders and opinion leaders for dedicating proceeds from the Tigsitaaba Festival to the construction of a library and other auxiliary facilities for the community. He said the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly would support the project to ensure its completion.
The festival, which serves as a platform for cultural expression and development dialogue, featured traditional performances, drumming and dancing, and renewed calls for unity and peace.
The event ended with calls for stronger collaboration between government, traditional authorities and the youth to harness agriculture as a tool for development in Yorogo and the wider Bolgatanga Municipality.
