Kongo United FC superbly defeated Pelungu FC 9-8 on penalties to win the 16th edition of the Meehiboug Youth Association’s annual inter-community football gala competition at the Gundork Primary School Park on Friday.
Kongo United, who made their first appearance at the tournament in 2025, produced a myriad of impressive performances throughout this year’s competition, with their only defeat coming against Zoogo FC – the most successful team since the inception of the tournament in 2010.
Pelungu FC dominated in large spells of the game, but the formidable defense of Kongo United, coupled with poor finishing, meant the game would end goalless and ultimately be decided on penalties.
Kongo FC nearly took the lead in the seventh minute of the contest when sporting number seven (7) shirted man Ronaldo, was played through on goal, only for the danger to be repelled by the excellent defense of Pelungu FC.
Pelungu FC returned from the break full of optimism of breaking the game‘s virginity, but terrific defending, together with exquisite goalkeeping from the Kongo United FC shot stopper Anafo Pascal, ensured the game ended in a share of the spoils in regulation time.
Gloves man Pascal became the hero of the contest as he produced a goalkeeping masterclass to win the game for Kongo United FC. Pascal saved two spot kicks to ensure his team won the game 9-8 on penalties.
