The Upper East Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Sarah Bachon-Ene Mwinibuobu Bamie, has visited the drying Dorongo reservoir, popularly referred to as “Dorongo Dam” by residents, a vital source of fish and livelihoods in the community.

It could be recalled that A1 News reported on the Dorongo reservoir drying up, leaving thousands of fish dead and fingerlings nowhere to be found, just four months after the rainy season. The news team visited the reservoir on March 20, 2026.

The Regional Director, Mrs. Bamie, and her team promptly visited the reservoir in the Dorongo community to gather firsthand information and offer advice after learning about the situation through the A1 News publication.

Speaking to residents, fishermen, and fishmongers during the visit, Mrs. Bamie expressed concern over the situation, citing its impact on fish stocks in the reservoir. “When I saw the picture, it’s not a good thing,” she said, pledging her outfit’s commitment to supporting efforts to address the issue and protect the fish stock for livelihoods.

She added, “I cannot sit here and promise you that this work can be done today or tomorrow. But whatever we, as an office, can support you to do—either through follow-ups or by exploring other opportunities—we will do it.”

However, Mrs. Bamie cautioned that the absence of water is a major concern and stressed that relocating farms and implementing sustainable practices are necessary to prevent future occurrences.

The Director, on behalf of the Commission, recommended relocating farms, planting trees and grasses to protect the water body, and undertaking regular clean-up exercises to prevent pollution. She urged community members to take responsibility for maintaining the reservoir and its surroundings when it is eventually desilted.

According to the Regional Director, the situation highlights the need for collaborative efforts to address environmental and livelihood challenges facing the community over the years.

Abagna Alex Abunga, Chairman of the Dorongo Farmers and Water Users Association, expressed excitement on behalf of beneficiaries of the reservoir about the Director’s visit. He urged the Commission to push for the desilting of the 1963 dam for the benefit of the community.

Assembly Member for the area, Richmond Atura, thanked the Director for her visit and pledged to collaborate with her and other stakeholders to restore the dam for the benefit of farmers, fishermen, and the wider community.

“I am happy madam said she will collaborate with us to see changes in our dam. I am ready any day, any time to work with her. I am grateful for your visit, madam,” he said.
