Thirty-six apprentices have graduated after completing a three-year training programme in tailoring and entrepreneurship skills in Bongo Soe in the Upper East Region.
The programme, organised by the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA), provided practical training and encouraged participants to work proactively to meet consumer demands.
The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of tailors and seamstresses in the Bongo Soe Central Zone by equipping them with essential skills, promoting a national fashion identity and encouraging appreciation of Ghanaian culture through clothing.
The graduation ceremony drew family members and friends who gathered to celebrate the achievements of the apprentices.
Speaking to Bolga FM, the zonal secretary of GNTDA, Emmanuel Akinkagte, said the training is expected to help reduce unemployment and promote self-reliance among graduates.
“The training is expected to reduce the unemployment rate in the country and make the graduates independent,” he said.
Akinkagte said the association has acquired land for the construction of an examination centre, which is about 85% complete. He said the facility will be used for practical training, meetings and social activities within the community and beyond. The association appealed to authorities and stakeholders to provide support to improve conditions for young people pursuing vocational skills.
The acting zonal chairperson of GNTDA, Esther Agoo, said tailors and seamstresses play a vital role in society, as nearly everyone depends on them for clothing. She called on the government to recognise the contribution of tailors and provide support to the sector.
Some of the graduates expressed gratitude to the association, saying the training had equipped them with valuable skills for self-employment.
“I am so happy that I could complete my three years, six months course. This training has opened a new door of opportunity for me to earn my livelihood,” said Agonkurigo Jennifer, one of the graduates.
A total of 36 women received certificates during the 14th graduation ceremony held at the Bongo Soe Primary School park.
The 15th batch of trainees is currently undergoing training at the centre.
Vocational training remains a key pathway to equipping young people, particularly women, with livelihood skills and expanding access to economic opportunities.
