The Bongo District Assembly on Friday, June 5, 2026, joined the rest of the country to mark this year’s Tree for Life Restoration Initiative with a tree-planting exercise at the Disability Centre in Bongo.
The event brought together traditional authorities led by the Paramount Chief and divisional chiefs, officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forestry Commission, and the District Chief Executive for Bongo, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga. Community members also participated in the exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and addressing climate change.
As part of the initiative, several trees were planted to demonstrate the district’s commitment to environmental conservation and support Ghana’s national afforestation agenda. The programme forms part of ongoing efforts to increase the country’s tree cover and protect natural resources for future generations.
Mrs. Ayamga urged residents to take active part in tree-planting activities and, more importantly, ensure that planted trees are properly nurtured and protected. She said tree planting should not be treated as a one-day event but as a long-term responsibility requiring sustained commitment from citizens.
She also called for collective action to make Bongo a greener and more environmentally sustainable district, noting the role of trees in improving air quality, preventing soil erosion, conserving biodiversity, and mitigating the effects of climate change.
Speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief, a representative of the traditional authority stressed the importance of environmental protection, noting that human survival is closely tied to the health of the environment. He urged residents to take environmental issues seriously.
He added: “When the last tree dies, the last man will equally die,” stressing the need for communities to work together to protect and sustain the environment.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance and building resilience against climate change.
Participants were encouraged to continue supporting environmental sustainability efforts and contribute to greening the district.
The exercise ended with a renewed commitment from stakeholders, traditional leaders, and residents to protect planted trees and promote environmental conservation across the district.
