The Sirigu Local Retiree Association marked this year’s Republic Day, observed as Senior Citizens Day, by donating washing detergents and other essential items to the Mother of Mercy Babies Home in the Kassena-Nankana District.

The association, made up of about 70 retired men and women, said the donation was intended to support vulnerable children and give back to the community.

Vice Chairman Roland Anyedena said the members chose to commemorate the occasion through charity after forming their own local association separate from the Navrongo chapter.

“We broke away from the Navrongo chapter to come home to the Kassena-Nankana zone. This year, we decided to celebrate Republic Day, which is Senior Citizens Day, by visiting the Mother of Mercy Babies Home to donate washing detergents,” he said.

Mr. Anyedena said the members were motivated by the challenges involved in caring for orphaned children.

“You all know that nobody chooses to be an orphan. We know it is not easy to care for them, and we wanted to show our love,” he added.

After the donation, the retirees visited the Martyrs of Uganda Health Centre, where they met with the Medical Superintendent to express appreciation for the healthcare services provided to older persons and the wider community.

The visit also included a health education session led by Rev. Fr. Felix Anarfo, who encouraged the retirees to maintain healthy lifestyles by exercising regularly, attending routine medical check-ups and avoiding the consumption of fresh meat.

The activities formed part of the association’s observance of Senior Citizens Day and highlighted the continuing role of retirees in community service and public health advocacy.
