The Bolgatanga East District Assembly has carried out a sanitation exercise at the Zuarungu Market as part of the National Sanitation Day initiative.

The exercise, led by District Chief Executive Jacob Abugre Aka-ERI, was originally scheduled for the first Saturday in June but was postponed due to heavy rainfall.

Mr. Abugre said the downpour made it impossible to proceed on the scheduled date, prompting the Assembly to return later to complete the clean-up.

Teams cleared refuse, desilted gutters, and transported waste to approved dumping sites within and around the market area, including the Zuarungu Chief’s Palace enclave and the Zuarungu Catholic Social Centre area.

Mr. Abugre described the exercise as successful, noting that it covered key parts of the market.

He also said the Assembly had recently recruited sanitation officers to help maintain cleanliness along major routes, including the Bolgatanga–Bawku road near the DVLA office.

According to him, the officers, who have been working for less than a month, are regularly clearing gutters and drains to prevent blockages.

Mr. Abugre said the Assembly will continue to support sanitation efforts and participate in monthly clean-up activities.

“Every first Saturday of the month, we will join the sanitation officers to clean areas that have not yet been reached,” he said.

He added that the initiative is aimed at improving sanitation and reducing environmental health risks in the district.
