The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has distributed more than 4,000 bags of fertilizer supplied by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to its members across the country ahead of this year’s farming season.
Speaking in an interview on Bolga FM on July 6, 2026, the Bolgatanga Municipal Chairman of PFAG, Rev. John Akaribo, said the fertilizer had been distributed to support smallholder farmers, with additional consignments expected through Tema Harbour.
“We have received over 4,000 bags of fertiliser from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), which have been distributed to our members across the country. We are still expecting additional supplies through Tema Harbour to support more farmers,” he said.
Rev. Akaribo urged farmers to begin planting once the rains become consistent, saying early planting increases the likelihood of a good harvest.
“Farmers should start planting early once the rains become consistent. Early planting improves the chances of a good harvest,” he advised.
He also encouraged farmers not to be discouraged by marketing challenges they faced during previous farming seasons, particularly difficulties in selling their produce.
“Farmers should not stop farming because they struggled to sell their produce last year. Agriculture remains our livelihood, and we must continue to produce,” he said.
Rev. Akaribo called on the government to purchase more produce from local farmers, arguing that guaranteed markets would encourage increased production and attract more young people into agriculture.
“The government should buy more produce from local farmers. This will motivate farmers to work harder and also attract the youth into farming,” he said.
The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana is the country’s apex farmer-based non-governmental organization. It advocates pro-poor agricultural and trade policies while promoting the welfare of smallholder farmers through programmes focused on food and nutrition security, climate change adaptation, agroecology, agricultural governance, agribusiness development, environmental conservation, and livestock and fisheries development.
