Youth in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region have taken to the streets to demand urgent action on the poor state of roads in the area, with particular focus on the 7.5-kilometre Asonge-Pelungu road.
The demonstration, held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, saw the youth march through the principal streets of Nabdam before presenting a petition to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Francis Yenwona Tobig, for onward transmission to the President.
The demonstrators carried placards with inscriptions including “Bad Roads Cause Lives,” “Poor Roads Kill,” “We Need Safe Access Roads,” and “Fix Our Roads Now,” among others.
Addressing the media during the protest, the leader of the youth group, Albert Dok-Dong, said the deteriorating road network in the district has reached unacceptable levels and is affecting economic activities, transportation, and access to essential services.
According to him, apart from the Bolgatanga-Bawku international highway, which passes through the district, Nabdam has no other tarred roads.
“It is now out of hand and we can’t accept it anymore. The roads are killing us every day,” he said.
Mr. Dok-Dong said the Asonge-Pelungu road, which connects several farming communities, becomes nearly impassable during the rainy season, resulting in high transport fares, vehicle breakdowns, and difficulties transporting farm produce to markets.
“The Nabdam District is home to thousands of households whose livelihoods depend on agriculture, trade, and access to social services in the district capital as well as surrounding community markets,” he said.
He added that many internal community roads and access routes connecting communities in the district are in a severely deteriorated condition.
In their petition, the youth called on the government to prioritise road construction in Nabdam, beginning with the 7.5-kilometre Asonge-Pelungu stretch.
They argued that improved roads would help unlock the agricultural potential of the district, improve healthcare delivery, and reduce road accidents.
The petition was received by the Nabdam DCE, Francis Yenwona Tobig, who assured the youth that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for consideration.
According to him, the Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawane, is working to ensure the road project is captured in the next national budget.
The demonstrators, however, warned that they would continue to hold authorities accountable and would not relent until concrete action is taken to improve the road network in the district.
