DVLA opens Navrongo office with new digital registration system

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced a new digital vehicle registration system designed to combat number plate fraud, with the newly commissioned Navrongo office serving as the first to implement the enhanced registration format.

Speaking at the opening of the DVLA office in Navrongo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Julius Neequaye Kotey, announced that vehicles registered at the office will bear the new “NV” prefix, replacing the existing registration format for the area.

Mr. Kotey explained that the innovation forms part of the Authority’s nationwide digital transformation agenda aimed at improving vehicle registration, enhancing security, and eliminating the production of fake number plates.

Under the current registration system, a single prefix can accommodate only up to 9,999 vehicle numbers before a new prefix is introduced. However, the new format incorporates additional alphabetical combinations, significantly expanding the registration capacity.

“For Navrongo, the registration prefix will be NV. A vehicle can now be registered as NV 0001 AA, NV 0001 AB, NV 0001 BA, among many other combinations. This system increases the registration capacity to about 6.7 million unique number plates,” he said.

According to the DVLA Chief Executive, the new numbering format is generated through a scientific algorithm that enables authorised agencies to electronically verify the authenticity of every registration.

Mr. Kotey said the system would also end the manual production of number plates, a practice he said has fuelled the proliferation of counterfeit registrations across the country.

“There are more than 200 companies embossing number plates. Some people illegally reproduce registration numbers simply by copying plates they see on the road. Under the new system, every number plate can be scientifically verified, making it extremely difficult to duplicate,” he stated.

He said the initiative demonstrates the Authority’s commitment to modernising vehicle registration, strengthening road safety, and improving public confidence in Ghana’s vehicle licensing system as more DVLA offices adopt the new registration format.
