Vehicle owners in the Kassena-Nankana area will no longer have to travel to Bolgatanga or Accra for vehicle registration and number plate services following the commissioning of a new Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office in Navrongo.
The new facility also introduces the “NV” vehicle registration code for Navrongo, replacing the “UE” number plates previously issued under the Upper East Regional designation.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo, said the project fulfils a promise he made during the 2024 election campaign after a DVLA staff member appealed for a permanent office for the Authority.
“During the 2024 campaign, a DVLA staff member approached me and said, ‘Honourable, if the people elect you, please help us get a befitting office.’ Today, I am happy that we have fulfilled that request,” Mr. Aworigo said.
He recalled the conditions under which DVLA personnel had worked for years from a temporary portable cabin at the Navrongo Municipal Police Station.
“I remember the extremely hot portable cabin where the staff worked under the scorching sun. After I was elected, I did not forget their request. I visited the Minister for Transport several times and constantly engaged the Chief Executive of the DVLA until this project became a reality,” he said.
The MP thanked President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister for Transport, and the Chief Executive of the DVLA for supporting the establishment of the office, describing it as a major improvement in public service delivery in the municipality.
Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, said the new office has been equipped with modern equipment to provide a full range of licensing and vehicle registration services.
“Number plates will now be produced here in Navrongo instead of residents travelling to Bolgatanga or Accra. The office has been fully equipped with the necessary tools to deliver efficient services,” he said.
Mr. Kotey said the introduction of the “NV” registration code marks a significant step in decentralising DVLA operations and improving convenience for motorists in the Upper East Region.
The new office is expected to reduce waiting times, lower travel costs for motorists, improve revenue mobilisation, and expand access to licensing and vehicle registration services for residents of Navrongo and surrounding districts.
