The Upper East Region is among 10 regions selected to benefit from the government’s plan to construct new secondary schools under a nationwide education infrastructure programme.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced that one new secondary school will be built in the Upper East Region to expand access to secondary education and address infrastructure deficits.
The project forms part of a broader programme that includes the construction of 10 new secondary schools nationwide, the rehabilitation of 150 existing secondary schools, the upgrading of 30 Category C schools to Category B, the upgrading of 20 Category B schools to Category A, and the provision of furniture for beneficiary schools.
According to Dr. Forson, the new schools will be built in the Western, Western North, Greater Accra, Volta, Oti, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Savannah and Central regions.
He said the programme is expected to benefit about 2.3 million students, more than 100,000 teachers and approximately 2,000 school leaders nationwide.
Dr. Forson said the investment forms part of the government’s efforts to strengthen human capital development by expanding access to quality education and improving learning environments.
He added that the programme will support efforts to eliminate the double-track system, improve learning outcomes, particularly in Mathematics and Science, and provide better teaching and learning facilities.
The Finance Minister said the inclusion of the Upper East Region reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable distribution of educational infrastructure across the country.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament.
