Regentropfen University College (RUC) has relaunched its President’s Scholarship for Females as part of activities marking its 10th anniversary, with the aim of increasing female participation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and agriculture-related programmes.
The scholarship, introduced by the university’s founder, Rev. Dr. Moses Asaah Awinongya SVD, in 2022, covers 50 percent of tuition fees for the first two academic years for eligible female students pursuing Bachelor of Science in Agriculture for Social Change, Bachelor of Education in Mathematics with ICT, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.
Rev. Dr. Awinongya said the scholarship was inspired by women who played key roles in the growth of the institution, particularly Prof. Agnes Atia Apusigah, the university’s first female Vice President, and his late mother, Mama Alice Akankuba-Mah Abingligro.
“Prof. Agnes Atia Apusigah was the first female Vice President of our institution and she also founded and funded the award for the best graduating female student,” he said.
He said the scholarship also honours his late mother’s commitment to supporting the education of young women despite not having received formal education herself.
“Though she was not formally educated, she made sure young women came to RUC and she helped finance them so they could build their future,” Rev. Dr. Awinongya said.
According to him, the university is committed to continuing the legacy of these women by creating opportunities for more females to pursue careers in agriculture, science, mathematics and technology.
“We feel it’s important to encourage more women in agriculture, science, mathematics, and technology,” he added.
The university also announced a separate scholarship package for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Under the package, beneficiaries will receive 60 percent tuition support during their first two academic years and 40 percent tuition support during the final two years of study.
Rev. Dr. Awinongya said the Accounting scholarship forms part of the university’s efforts to strengthen professional training and prepare the next generation of accountants for Ghana’s development.
Regentropfen University College, located at Kansoe, Namoo in the Upper East Region, offers degree, diploma and postgraduate programmes through its Faculties of Applied Sciences, Humanities and Health Sciences.
