The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has stepped in to support the completion of a Junior High School (JHS) block at Basiengo Kindergarten (KG), Primary and JHS following years of poor infrastructure that has left pupils sitting on the bare floor and forced enrolment to drop.
The intervention comes after A1 Radio visited and reported on the deplorable conditions at the school. On February 18th 2026, A1 Radio and a1radioonline.com highlighted how pupils from KG1 to Basic 7 are enduring harsh and humiliating learning conditions.
Established in 2016 with a 3-unit classroom block, Head Teacher’s Office and Staff Common Room, meant for only kindergarten pupils, the school has expanded to Basic 7 (JHS 1) with no additional infrastructure added nearly a decade on. With classrooms overstretched, teachers have had to vacate the staff common room to accommodate KG1 and KG2 pupils.
Teachers themselves sit on their motorbikes under a tree during breaks to mark exercises. The PTA then attempted to help by constructing a pavilion for Basic 4, 5 and 6 pupils. However, the structure has leaking roofs, open windows and cracked walls, offering little protection from the weather. The biggest challenge remains furniture. Pupils from KG to JHS sit on the floor or lie on their bellies to write.
Head teacher at the school, Madam Alosere Elizabeth, described the situation as “deplorable and unsustainable.” “Our enrolment has dropped from 145 in 2023 to 111 this year because some parents have withdrawn their children due to these poor conditions,” she told A1 News. She added that some teachers are also refusing postings to the school due to the lack of basic facilities.
PTA Chairman, Simon Amoah, described the condition as “unbearable” and warned that enrolment could drop further. “The community has tried its best by putting up the pavilion, but this is beyond what parents can handle alone,” he said. James Nbotayamga, a representative of the Chief, also questioned why the school had been neglected despite repeated appeals.
Following this report, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly intervened and took over the community-initiated single classroom block and expanded it to accommodate up to Basic 7, with a Headteacher’s office and staff common room. When the Municipal Chief Executive, Roland Atanga Ayoo, inspected the school, confirmed the infrastructure gaps.
“There are some projects undertaken, but they have not been completed; they are inherited projects. So, this Junior High School block I told you about was initiated by the community. So, the assembly is assisting them just to finish it,” he said.
The MCE added that “yes, the school has infrastructure challenges, but this is what the assembly can support for now”. The Assembly has assured that it will prioritize completing the JHS block to ease pressure on the existing facilities.
Community members expressed gratitude to the Assembly for taking over the JHS project started by the community. However, they say more needs to be done because the Primary and KG pupils are still pairing in classrooms and lack furniture.
Simon Amoah, the school PTA Chairman, thanked the assembly, but added that, “as you can see next academic year, we will have JHS 2, so we still need an additional six or more classroom blocks to be able to accommodate all the students”, he said.
