The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly (BOLMA) has distanced itself from claims by its Presiding Member, Lambert Akunzebe, that the Assembly has imposed an 8:00 p.m. deadline on passing-out ceremonies, graduation ceremonies, launching events and other social gatherings within the municipality.
Mr. Akunzebe had reportedly stated that the restriction formed part of revised Assembly bylaws intended to maintain order and address concerns associated with events that continue late into the night.
However, in a press release dated August 30, 2026, the management of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly said the statement attributed to the Presiding Member did not represent the official position of the Assembly.
The Assembly said it became aware of a publication originating from Dreamz FM and subsequently circulated on social media, claiming that the Assembly had placed an 8:00 p.m. deadline on passing-out ceremonies and launching events.
According to the statement, the publication was attributed to the Presiding Member and was presented as the official position of the Assembly, a claim management said was “NOT the case.”
The Assembly clarified that although it has a bylaw relating to the regulation of nocturnal events and ceremonies, the bylaw does not impose a blanket ban on events beyond 8:00 p.m.
Management explained that records from a mandatory Assembly meeting held in September 2024 showed that the relevant bylaw was revised to place restrictions specifically on minors under the age of 18.
According to the Assembly, the revised provision prohibits minors from attending social gatherings and ceremonies beyond midnight, rather than imposing an 8:00 p.m. deadline on all public events.
The statement further stressed that the Assembly could not pass bylaws or adopt resolutions that contradict national government policy, particularly the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy.
The Assembly therefore urged media houses and the public to take note of the clarification and give it the necessary publicity. The press release was signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Peter Atogewe Wedam.
