The Bongo District Health Director, Estella Abazesi, has encouraged residents to report health workers who mistreat them or exhibit unprofessional behaviour while providing healthcare services.
She said complaints about the conduct and attitude of health workers should be reported to the appropriate authorities to allow them to investigate and take the necessary action.
Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga programme, Madam Abazesi said community management teams have been established at various Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds to help monitor healthcare delivery, including the conduct of health workers.
She explained that members of the teams have been trained to monitor activities at the facilities and serve as an important link between health workers and the communities they serve.
Madam Abazesi said nursing and other healthcare professions require proper training and continuous learning, stressing that health workers are expected to conduct themselves professionally when attending to patients.
She therefore encouraged residents not to remain silent when they encounter poor treatment at health facilities but to report their concerns through the appropriate channels for investigation.
The District Health Director also called for greater cooperation among health workers, patients and community members, saying such collaboration is necessary to improve healthcare delivery across the district.
Madam Abazesi also spoke about the government’s Free Primary Healthcare initiative, which she said has been launched in the Bongo District and is currently being implemented.
According to her, the initiative places significant emphasis on disease prevention and encourages residents to undergo basic health screening to identify potential health risks early.
She said residents can undergo checks including blood pressure and weight measurements, among other health indicators, as part of efforts to promote preventive healthcare and healthier lifestyles.
Madam Abazesi encouraged residents to take advantage of the initiative and pay greater attention to preventive healthcare rather than waiting until they become ill before seeking medical attention.
