The Ayelbia CHPS Compound in the Bongo District is operating with only two nurses and no maternity ward despite serving a community of about 1,161 people, according to the head of the facility, Moses Amooro Ayisoba.
The situation means pregnant women who require maternity services have to travel from Ayelbia to the Soe Health Centre, a journey Mr Ayisoba said is made more difficult by the poor condition of the road linking the communities.
He disclosed the challenges on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, during a community durbar on free primary healthcare services and health education at Ayelbia in the Bongo-Soe Sub-District.
Mr Ayisoba appealed to health authorities and the Bongo District Health Directorate to provide additional health workers and support the facility with a maternity ward to improve healthcare delivery in the community.
The durbar, organised by the Ayelbia community in collaboration with health workers, brought together 72 residents, comprising 60 females and 12 males.
As part of the programme, 64 people underwent Body Mass Index (BMI) screening, while 51 were screened for malaria, HIV and syphilis.
Mr Ayisoba said the government’s free primary healthcare initiative, being implemented by the Ghana Health Service, is intended to improve access to basic preventive healthcare services.
He explained that residents who visit the facility can access basic health screening services, including blood pressure checks and screening for various health conditions.
The durbar also focused on substance abuse, particularly among young people, with health workers educating residents on the health risks associated with marijuana, alcohol and other illicit drugs.
A resident, Ernest Nsobila, said the education had helped participants better understand the effects of substance abuse on their health and wellbeing.
He commended the health workers and community leaders for organising the programme and expressed hope that young people would apply the lessons and help discourage substance abuse in the community.
