The Bongo-Balungo Market Women Association has led a clean-up exercise at the Bongo-Balungo Market following concerns about poor sanitation at the trading centre.
The exercise, held on Monday, September 14, 2026, brought together market women, traditional leaders, the Assembly Member and other community members to clear waste and improve sanitation within the market and its surroundings.
Chairperson of the Bongo-Balungo Market Women Association, Gladys Akologo, said the group decided to act after becoming concerned about the sanitary conditions at the market, particularly during the rainy season.
She said members of the association regularly hold meetings at the market and have experienced mosquito bites during the rainy season, prompting them to take steps to clean the environment.
Madam Akologo called on traders to take responsibility for keeping their immediate trading areas clean and urged residents and market users to dispose of refuse in the Zoomlion containers provided.
A member of the association, Geribel Apiah, said the group organised the exercise after observing that the market had become increasingly dirty.
He, however, expressed disappointment at the low participation of some shop owners and community members and urged them to take greater responsibility for sanitation at the market.
Moses Atanga Akurigo, described by the association as the father of the women’s group, commended the market women for taking the initiative.
He appealed to shop owners and traders at markets across the Bongo District to regularly collect their waste and dispose of it in designated containers instead of allowing refuse to accumulate around their trading areas.
Augustina Adongo, described as the mother of the group, also called on traders and residents to keep their surroundings clean, stressing the importance of sanitation to healthy living.
The clean-up exercise was organised in collaboration with the Bongo-Balungo Chief and elders, the Assembly Member, market leaders and other opinion leaders in the community.
The association called for greater participation from traders and residents in future exercises and encouraged market users to make maintaining a clean environment a regular responsibility.
