All 15 districts and municipalities in the Upper East Region have been included in the first phase of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare Policy, according to the Information Services Department (ISD).
The policy is being implemented at primary healthcare facilities, including Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres and polyclinics.
Bolgatanga Municipal Information Officer Peter Atogewe Wedam said the first phase does not cover district, regional and teaching hospitals.
Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga, Mr Wedam said the Ghana Health Service, which is leading the implementation of the policy, had brought 4,574 health facilities across 135 districts nationwide under the first phase.
He said all 15 districts and municipalities in the Upper East Region were among those selected for the initial implementation.
The policy is intended to reduce financial barriers to accessing healthcare and encourage people to seek essential services at the primary healthcare level.
Mr Wedam encouraged residents of the Upper East Region, particularly those in the Bolgatanga Municipality, to use participating facilities and learn more about the services available under the policy.
The Information Services Department is undertaking public education on the implementation of the policy in the Bolgatanga Municipality.
As part of the sensitisation campaign, Mr Wedam said he had visited churches, mosques, basic schools and second-cycle institutions to educate residents about the policy.
He has also appeared on four radio stations in the municipality as part of efforts to increase public awareness of the programme.
