Calls are growing among residents of the Nabdam Constituency in the Upper East Region for Development Specialist, Rexford Bugre Yamdong, to consider contesting the parliamentary seat in the next general election, with supporters citing his development expertise, leadership experience and appeal across political divides.
The calls, involving youth, elders, professionals, opinion leaders and political activists, reflect growing demands for a representative they believe can attract development opportunities and effectively champion the constituency’s needs.
Some residents say Nabdam needs a leader with a strong understanding of community development, the ability to mobilise resources and the capacity to engage stakeholders to address local challenges.
They believe Mr. Yamdong’s professional background and grassroots connections make him a potential candidate capable of bringing different groups together to pursue the constituency’s development aspirations.
An elder in the constituency said residents needed to pay greater attention to the leadership experience and development credentials of parliamentary candidates.
“We need people who understand development and know what communities truly need. In the past, we supported candidates without adequately considering their leadership background and development credentials. In the end, they failed to initiate and attract the level of development the constituency expected,” the elder said.
A youth activist also called for a shift in how residents assess prospective parliamentary candidates, arguing that competence and the ability to create opportunities should be central to the decision.
“Today, people are looking beyond politics. They want someone who can create opportunities, attract investment, and advocate effectively for the constituency. Rexford has demonstrated the qualities many of us believe are needed to move Nabdam forward,” the activist said.
Although the growing calls appear to cut across political affiliations, it remains unclear which political party, if any, Mr. Yamdong would represent should he decide to contest the seat.
He has also yet to publicly declare an intention to enter the parliamentary race.
The residents advocating for his candidacy say his accessibility, humility and ability to connect with people from different communities could help him build broad support and promote unity in the constituency.
They argue that the next parliamentary contest presents an opportunity for residents to assess prospective candidates based on their capacity to attract investment, advance development and represent the interests of the people.
Whether Mr. Yamdong will respond to the calls remains uncertain, but his name is increasingly being raised by residents who believe his professional experience and development-oriented leadership could benefit Nabdam.
