Miller Open University Organise Its Second Matriculation

The first Open University in Ghana, Miller Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS/MOU) located in Bolgatanga on Saturday held its second matriculation for fresh students to undertake various programs. The 13 students will undertake courses in Degree, Masters and PHD programs.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor David Miller addressing students during the matriculation ceremony said the university has positioned itself to contribute towards finding solutions to challenges confronting Africans, hence pan Africanism is a critical part of the university scholarship.

According to Prof. Miller, the establishment of an open university was to go beyond universities that confines scholarships to prescribed areas of study hence the introduction of a transdisciplinary university that will go in the areas of culture, spirituality and transformation.

The first of an accredited university type institute in the Upper East Region is the first Ghanaian university in the country to respond to clarion calls for universities in Ghana to go beyond their traditional on-campus, satellite campus and distance learning to Open University System. Prof. Miller added that the Open University System provides direct engagement of students with industries before graduation.

“Miller Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies/Miller Open University is committed to providing balanced access to female applicants, physically challenged persons and social excluded persons to pursue its academic programs”. “As an open university, MITDS/MOU is committed to engaging with all well meaning Non Governmental Organizations Civil Society Organizations to providing quality community service” he stated.

Prof. Miller on the occasion passionately appealed to government, donor partners, philanthropist to assist the university in its toddling stages with Information Communication Technology services, library, classroom and an administration block.

The Vice Chancellor challenged the matriculants to apply the knowledge that will be acquired to transform the society.

The ceremony was also used to acknowledge special persons and organizations for their contributions to MITDS/MOU up to date. A1 Radio 101.1 MHz and other media houses in the region were acknowledge for giving the university publicity and air space.
