Revenue leakages hit DVLA due to fake number plate registration

The Upper East regional branch of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is said to be recording revenue leakages as a result of issuance of fake number plates by individuals.

According to Acting Upper East Regional Manager of DVLA, Mutawakil Abdulai, some individuals in the region are engaged in the procurement and issuance of fake licenses and number plates to the public.

FAKE NUMBER PLATES

It will be recalled that the DVLA together with the police services in August this year arrested two suspects in the Asante region upon a tip-off of engaging in fake number plates production.

But speaking exclusive to A1radioonline.com, the acting regional DVLA manager disclosed that the issuance of fake number plates outside the region has narrowed down to the region where individuals engage in the production and issuance of fake number plates.

“We realized that there were outsiders who were bringing it and be making profit from innocent people in the region [but] we found out that we have people within the town itself who are involved in the job. We are putting intelligence together to trace to those people who are doing it and when we get to the bottom of the matter we will stop them”

Mr. Abdulai expressed worry that actions of the syndicates are causing revenue leakages to the authority.

“We are supposed to have let’s say 8000 and above registered motorcycles in the year and assuming every year you have 3000 losses. Every year they sell 3000 fake number plates in the system and you know how much that quantity is it. The 3000 plates is not a small amount of money.”

For security reasons Mr. Abdulai stated that “if you found yourself using a motorcycle or tricycle with this illegitimate or unauthorized number plates in it [and] if there is a robbery case, I bet you, you cannot trace the owner of the property”

He has therefore entreated the public to apply for their vehicle and motorbike licenses only at the DVLA. Mr. Abdulai also advised the public to be wary of fake number plates and report to the appropriate authorities upon suspicion.
