The District Chief Executive for Talensi, John Millim Nabwomya, has expressed satisfaction with the improved participation in the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise held at Pwalugu in the Upper East Region.
Mr. Nabwomya said although participation was initially poor, more residents, traditional leaders and other stakeholders joined as the exercise progressed.
“When I started, the turnout for the clean-up exercise was poor, but I was happy to see our chiefs and residents joining in. I am impressed with the response,” Mr. Nabwomya said.
He commended participants for their commitment and urged residents to make environmental cleanliness a regular habit to promote good health and prevent disease outbreaks.
The exercise began in Pwalugu township, with participants cleaning streets through to the Police Training School before ending at the Kwalugu tollbooth.
It brought together staff of the Talensi District Assembly, personnel from the Ghana Police Service and Ghana National Fire Service, assembly members, youth groups and residents.
Former Assembly Member for the Pwalugu Electoral Area, Paul Akanaba, said maintaining a clean environment was critical to protecting public health.
“Health is the foundation of every community, and without a clean environment, people are more likely to fall sick,” he said.
The exercise formed part of the National Sanitation Day initiative aimed at encouraging communities to take greater responsibility for environmental cleanliness and public health.
