Authorities at the University of Education at Winneba in the Central Region have closed down campuses across the country in response to a court order barring principal staffs from working.
The order comes on the back of a legal challenge to the legitmacy of the University’s Council. All students have been ordered to leave the various campuses.
The legal challenge was filed by Kofi Kwayera, a former assemblyman who argues that per the law establishing tertiary institutions, the current governing council of the University of Education inaugurated in 2009 and still acting constitutes an illegality.
He’s asking the court to declare null and void decisions including appointments made by both the Council and the Vice Chancelor.
Mr Kwayera further argues that the law only entitles the council to a four year mandate which ended in 2013.
Per the directive of the court, the Vice Chancelor, the principal officers and their assigns whose appointments and promotions were effected by that Council ceases to function.
In the absence of these persons authorities of the University believe the institution cannot work effectively hence decided to shut down the school. But however said closure is temporary.
We recently reported that the dissolution of governing councils of Public Tertiary institutions in Ghana by government has led to undue delay of graduation of thousands of students across the country.
The affected granduants are enraged about situation due to its effect on their academic and job opportunities.
The affected students say they “are likely to explode” should the delay continue unabated.
Thousands of Sandwich students of the University of Education,Winneba have been left stranded as the Institution has indefinitely postponed the 21st congregation scheduled to have taken place in April this year.
A statement issued by UEW explained that “The April, 2017 Session of the 21 Congregation of the University of Education, Winneba should have come-off in April, 2017 as indicated on the academic calendar. However, the Governing Council which should have presided over the April, 2017 Session has been dissolved. For that reason, all graduands are hereby officially informed that the April, 2017 Session of the 21 Congregation has been postponed.”
The statement further indicated that ” dates for the Congregation Ceremonies would be communicated to all graduands as soon as the Governing Council is reconstituted”.
