A member of the New Patriotic Party’s communication team in the Upper East region, Sammy Akonka has said calls for the provision of an alternative source of livelihood for people engaged in galamsey is funny and weird.

There have been calls on government to provide an alternative source of livelihood for people indulging in the menace of galamsey as government is working to end the act that has destroyed several properties in the country.

But speaking on A1 Radio’s flagship programme, Sammy Akonka indicated that a call for alternative source of livelihood for the people indulging in the illegality is unfortunate.

According to him, it is not the duty of government to provide people with employment but to provide a platform for businesses to thrive and that is what government is currently doing.

“There are people who have attended several schools and have several degrees but do not have employment so what are they talking about? Some Nurses even picketed at the Ministry but government could not provide them with employment so what people are saying about providing an alternative source of livelihood for the people Is unfounded,” he told host of A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East, Christopher Asima.

He quizzed “So what if every unemployed person in Ghana now joins galamsey just because they want government to provide them with a source of livelihood, what will become of the country”.

Sammy Akonka hailed the National Democratic Congress for being a matured opposition for supporting the fight against galamsey and called on government to do more to safeguard the environment.

However, Communication Member of the PNC, Johnson Ayine thinks that a call for an alternative source of livelihood is very imperative.

According to him, if people indulging in galamsey are left without job, there will be total insecurity in the country because most of the people may engage in acts such as armed robbery.
