Collapse of Tamne Bridge hampers Garu-Tempane District Assembly Revenue Mobilization

Revenue mobilization in the Garu-Tempane district is said to be on decline following the recent collapse of the Tamne bridge which until its collapse was a major source of revenue for the assembly.

The Tamne bridge links Garu-Tempane district and Bawku municipality both vibrant towns in the Upper East region and parts of the Northern region. The bridge collapsed when an articulated truck carrying bags of foodstuff almost carved in it July this year.

Although an emergency route has been created for vehicles and travelers, the situation according to District Chief Executive of Garu-Tempane, Emmanuel Asore Avaka is not only stressful to travelers, it is also adversely affecting the assembly’s revenue mobilization.

“It’s damming to know the effect. We have high internally generated income or revenue from the serial crops that we are noted for that people come all away from Kumasi and Accra to buy them to go and sell. So the collapsed bridge makes it difficult for such an activity to be carried out.

Mr. Avaka added that the district has been brought to its knees because heavy duty trucks that travels to the district to load foodstuff “can no longer find their way through except through a smaller rout which is not also possible because of the nature of the smaller bridges that are located there”

The DCE stated that government has given assurance to fix the bridge as soon as possible. He added that although security measures have been put in place to avert unforeseen disaster at the area he urged road users to be circumspect when travelling along the area.
