The First Trustee of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Madam Victoria Affram has revealed that male teachers posted to rural areas are turning into drunkards because of bad company.

Madam Victoria who was speaking to issues on why teachers reject posting to rural areas indicated that since the teachers do not have good company in the villages they are sent to and lack proper facilities, they become friends of palmwine tapper, Akpeteshie bar operators and distillers.

She added that with time, they lose interest in teaching and take to farming when they are given tracks of land by the locals.

Madam who was speaking on Accra-based FM indicated that the situation of female teachers is very worrying because some of them have to exchange sex for food or they go hungry and die.

She called on government to create similar opportunities that the Urban folks enjoy in the rural settings in order to encourage teachers to accept posting to rural area so that they do not experience retrogression in their lives.

“When they get into the village, they associate themselves with palm wine tappers and akpetishie distillers and eventually turn into drunkards. Some of them are eventually given tracks of lands to go into farming and no longer have interest in returning into the cities to further their education.”

“They have no places to leave and cannot afford to rent because for the first three months no salaries come. Government must provide them with the cost of transportation. Those fresh from the colleges need quarters at rural areas so that they do not fall prey to some of these things. Opinion leaders offer to help them but with attached strings which has led to some of them getting pregnant because they must survive.”
