Taxi Drivers in the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga have said Taxi business in the Municipality have died out with the introduction of the tricycles popularly known as “Mahama Camboo”.

According to them, although they have reduced their charges, the passengers have been accustomed to the use of the tricycles and therefore do not use the services they offer.

“We are been challenged because of the John Mahama Camboo because they have come to spoil the market. Now the market is not good at all and that is a worry. Even you will met passengers on the road and if you honk your horn, they will not mind you but when they see the tricycles, they get on board”.

They indicated that the dire situation has made some drivers sell their taxis to join the “John Mahama Camboo” business because it is more lucrative and the passenger prefer that to that of the taxis.

“Previously, we used to make about sixty cedis in a day but for now, getting even 20 cedis is a problem because the John Mahama Camboo riders take everything. It is a very worrying trend but we cannot do anything about,” the drivers told Sulemana Akurugu.

Although the Taxi drivers wish the “John Mahama Camboo” will be taken out of the system, there is no law in existence and they have to endure the.

They indicated that if things don’t pick up, they will also resort to the trend of selling their vehicles to purchase tricycles so they may also “enjoy” the money they (Tricycle riders) are also enjoying.
